Lorem Ipsum is a term familiar to many in the world of design and publishing. It’s the standard placeholder text used in the typesetting and printing industry to fill a space with content that will eventually be replaced with meaningful text. But where does Lorem Ipsum come from? This article explores its origins, history, and purpose.
Lorem Ipsum has a surprisingly deep historical background that dates back over 2,000 years. The text is derived from a work of classical Latin literature written by Cicero in 45 BC. The piece in question is titled “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil), which is a treatise on ethics.
The exact passage used for Lorem Ipsum comes from Book 1, section 10, lines 32-33 of this work. The text was modified from its original Latin form to create what we now know as Lorem Ipsum. The intention was to produce text that mimics the structure of English prose without being distractingly meaningful.
Lorem Ipsum’s use as placeholder text began in the 1960s with the advent of Letraset, a company that created dry transfer sheets for typography. These sheets included snippets of Lorem Ipsum text. The modern use of Lorem Ipsum was solidified with desktop publishing software, such as Aldus PageMaker, which also included Lorem Ipsum in its templates.
1. Neutral Content: Lorem Ipsum provides a neutral, non-distracting text that allows designers and typesetters to focus on the visual aspects of a layout without being influenced by the content.
2. Consistency: Using Lorem Ipsum ensures that the placeholder text maintains a consistent appearance, which helps in assessing the design’s flow and typography.
3. Legibility Testing: By simulating natural language, Lorem Ipsum helps in evaluating how readable and visually appealing a layout is, without the interference of actual meaningful text.
Lorem Ipsum is generated by randomly selecting and modifying Latin text from Cicero’s work. The resulting text typically consists of nonsensical phrases that resemble Latin in structure but are not meaningful in context. Here’s a brief example:
“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.”
Lorem Ipsum text can vary slightly based on the generator used. Some variations might include additional text or slight modifications, but the core principles remain the same.
While Lorem Ipsum remains popular, there are alternative placeholder texts used in design, including:
