When working on design or editorial projects, you might have come across blocks of random text filling up space where actual content is yet to be placed. This text, known as placeholder text, serves an essential role in giving a visual representation of what the final design will look like once the real text is added. Among the various forms of placeholder text, one stands out as the most common and widely used: “Lorem Ipsum.”
Lorem Ipsum is derived from sections of a 1st-century BC Latin text written by the Roman statesman and philosopher, Cicero. However, the use of this text as placeholder content dates back to the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled Cicero’s text to create a type specimen book. Since then, “Lorem Ipsum” has become the industry standard for placeholder text in design, publishing, and web development.
The ubiquity of Lorem Ipsum as placeholder text stems from its neutral and nonsensical nature. Despite being based on Latin, “Lorem Ipsum” doesn’t contain any coherent meaning, which makes it ideal for simulating real content without distracting the viewer with actual words and sentences. Its letters and word lengths mimic the look and feel of real language, making it perfect for gauging the appearance of a design with text in place.
Another reason “Lorem Ipsum” is the go-to placeholder text is that it maintains a uniform structure and has become a recognizable standard across many industries. Designers, developers, and typographers often need a universal, non-distracting filler that fits well into various layouts, and “Lorem Ipsum” perfectly serves that purpose.
While “Lorem Ipsum” is the most common placeholder text, there are several alternatives, especially for those who want a more playful or thematic approach. Some of the alternatives include:
However, “Lorem Ipsum” remains the most favored due to its familiarity and neutrality.
